IN FEBRUARY 19951 was sitting in my shop in Carmel, California. The early morning coastal fog was swirling down Ocean Avenue in typical fashion, bringing a damp sea smell. The shop was called "Exotic Siam" and my wife and I sold antiques and handcrafts from her native Thailand. The door opened and an elderly gentleman came in with a gust of cold air. Too early for the tour buses so he must be a local, I thought. He was wearing a faded but elegant leather jacket with fashionable elbow patches. His silver hair was cropped short and his clear gray eyes expressed a strength of purpose. Walking with a slight limp, his first visit to our shop was confined to a brisk walk-through. He cast a knowledgeable glance at the merchandise and without a single word he disappeared back into the dense fog.
